Getting Tested for Acid Reflux Disease

Why do I need a barium upper gastrointestinal (GI) x-ray?

Your health care provider has recommended this test because of your symptoms, which may e a sign of acid reflux disease. With acid reflux disease, the acid in your stomach backs up into the esophagus (your food pipe) and causes symptoms of a burning feeling rising from the stomach to the chest.  The barium upper GI x-ray is used to look for any damage to your esophagus or stomach from the acid.

How does the barium upper GI x-ray work?
It’s really simple! You will swallow a barium liquid that coats your esophagus and stomach. The barium helps your digestive systems show up on x-ray – and this makes it easier for your health care provider to see if you have any problems, such as ulcers.

How do I prepare for the test?
The night before the test, do not eat or drink anything before midnight. Remember, this means no breakfast in the morning – and no coffee either. Be sure to tell your health care provider if you have any medicines you must take in the morning.

What can I expect during the test?
Relax! The test is painless and should only take about 1 to 2 hours to complete.

-You simply drink a large glass of thick, chalky-tasting liquid. This is the barium. It may taste funny, but sometimes a flavoring is added top make it more pleasant tasting

X-ray pictures will be taken while you swallow the barium. Your health care provider will continue to take pictures as the barium moves through your system.
